about
“Winter Nights” is a poem I stumbled upon in the fall of 2019 on a certain weekend when I was in a particularly festive mood. It was a poem written by Thomas Campion, an English poet and composer of the late 16th and early 17th centuries, but likely due to its brevity, Campion never set the text to music. Around the same time, I had been spending much of my time listening to Jacob Collier’s rendition of “In the Bleak Midwinter”. I developed a particular fondness for the arrangement, most notably for his use of jazz harmony to enhance the existing piece. I decided that I wanted to write a piece in the spirit of the Christmas season, and I wanted to draw from Collier’s arrangement in it; effectively, I wanted to write a modern jazz Christmas carol.
lyrics
Now winter nights enlarge
This number of their hours;
And clouds their storms discharge
Upon the airy towers.
Let now the chimneys blaze
And cups o'erflow with wine,
Let well-tuned words amaze
With harmony divine...
This time doth well dispense
With lovers' long discourse;
Much speech hath some defense,
Though beauty no remorse.
All do not all things well:
Some measures comely tread,
Some knotted riddles tell,
Some poems smoothly read.
The summer hath his joys,
And winter his delights;
Though love and all his pleasures are but toys
They shorten tedious nights.
